Recently, James Mandell, MD, president and CEO, met with Javier Marin, editor of the Spanish-language newspaper El Planeta, to discuss joint efforts
between the hospital and the newspaper. Marin
suggested a unique story idea: to have one of his reporters spend the day at Children's Hospital Boston's Emergency Department and write about the
experience from a Latino perspective. Ironically enough, Marin became part of the story when
he and his wife spent Thanksgiving Day in the ED with their youngest son, Alejandro. Marin sent the following letter to Dr. Mandell after his son's surgery.
Estimado Dr. James Mandell,
I wanted to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come to our offices and meet with us. On the evening of Thanksgiving, my family had a first-hand experience at your wonderful hospital. My son Alejandro was rushed to Children's Emergency Department for what turned out to be an emergency appendectomy. I can't thank the staff at the Emergency Department enough—they were so attentive and reassuring to my family.
I want to especially say "gracias" to Heather, the nurse on the 10th floor, and everyone in the Emergency lobby who was there until midnight the evening of November 23. Also to Dr. Kim, who performed the surgery on my son November 24.
We look forward to building a strong relationship with Children's and supporting its wonderful efforts in the Hispanic/Latino community. We will be in touch with you in the New Year to develop a plan to help us partner to better serve Children's and the Spanish community.
Warm regards,
Javier Marin
