A day of remembrance

On December 1, World AIDS Day, the Children's Hospital AIDS Program (CHAP) unveiled an AIDS Memorial Quilt in the Patient Entertainment Center. Just like the National AIDS Memorial Quilt, this community art project is made up of vibrantly colored individual panels crafted by families and caretakers of people who have passed away due to AIDS. In this case, the panels represented Children's patients who have passed away. Many of the families who made panels for the quilt were at the unveiling, and it was clear that the quilt project was an emotional experience for them. "It was the most remarkable experience of my life," says CHAP nurse Nancy Karthas, CPNP. At the event, Kenneth McIntosh, MD, Sandra Burchett, MD, and Nancy Karthas, CPNP, spoke. Social worker Jackie Miranda said a few words too: "It's the best thing I've ever done professionally at Children's." CHAP hopes to continue to promote AIDS awareness with an annual display of the quilt.
