Research Focus: Brachial Plexus Program

The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that run from the cervical spine to the muscles of the upper limb. Brachial Plexus Birth Palsy (BPBP) refers to an injury to these nerves during childbirth.

Under the direction of Dr. Peter M. Waters and his new associate Dr. Donald S. Bae, the Brachial Plexus Program at Children's Hospital Boston has cared for over 500 BPBP patients since its inception.

Supported in part by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), the Brachial Plexus Program has been directing a multi-center prospective study to determine the optimal age for microsurgical nerve repair in infants with brachial plexus birth palsy and upper extremity weakness.
