Prevention of Depression in Adolescents

"Prevention of Depression in Adolescents with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Using Cognitive Behavioral Intervention: Improving Coping Skills and Social and Emotional Functioning"
Depression is a common problem in children and adolescents with IBD. This may be the result of the underlying diagnosis or the medications used to treat these chronic inflammatory processes. This study will compare two approaches to prevent depression in adolescents with IBD. The first approach involves giving patients and their families specific information about depression including ways to protect themselves against becoming depressed. The second approach is a cognitive behavioral intervention (CBI) that will teach adolescents coping strategies that will help them to develop healthier perspectives on the illness. The CBI used in this study has been shown to help individuals alter their activities, behavior, and negative thinking, and to improve their mood and ability to cope with their physical illness. Eligible adolescents will receive either CBI or information.
