Reduced bone mineral density (BMD), referred to as osteopenia or osteoporosis, is found in 38-50% of adults and in 30-70% of children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and may increase the risk of broken bones. While there are a number of approved medications for the treatment of bone disease in adults, there are currently no approved medications or established guidelines for their use in children with IBD. This pilot study, supported by a grant from the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), will determine the safety and effect(s) of intranasal calcitonin (a naturally occurring hormone that prevents bone loss) in children and teenagers. It will also provide information about the longitudinal natural history of bone accretion/loss in children with IBD.
