Music and cognition
Description
Are you interested in language, music, and how the two are connected? We are currently investigating this, and in particular how (cognitively) the two are related.
Eligibility
We are looking for participants ages 6-12 WITH or WITHOUT MUSICAL TRAINING to assist us with research into this relationship!
Participation
In the course of this particular study we would play fun games with your child to explore their reading, language and other cognitive abilities. The purpose of this is to characterize the cognitive profile of each of the above groups. In the second component of the study we would also complete an MRI, a standard imaging technique that uses magnetic fields to create images of the brain. The two sessions are conducted at a time convenient to you, take (respectively) approximately 3 and 2 hours, and you would be reimbursed for parking costs associated with participating.

The sessions will be conducted at Children?s Hospital (1 Autumn St., Boston; and 9 Hope St., Waltham) by a team of researchers who are fully trained and highly experienced in working with young children, and participants receive fun prizes, and an image of their brain. Families who have participated in our previous studies have told us they found the experience unique, highly enjoyable, and educational. The games we play with the children are carefully selected for each age group, and are based on standardized assessments of reading, language, attention and other cognitive skills. We aim to have equal representation of children who are and are not highly musically trained/skilled. It would be our pleasure to share the overall results of this study with you at the study?s completion.
