Children Study (age 4 to 6)
Is your child a pre-reader? Is your child at risk for developmental dyslexia or would you like to help develop methods for the early identification of reading disabilities?

If you have young children in the pre-reading stage you are invited to participate in a research project aimed at developing early identification of reading difficulties.
Researcher: Dr. Nadine Gaab (PI) and her Team, Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston

Looking for: Children between the ages of 4-6 with or without a family history of dyslexia.

Scope of Participation: Children will receive behavioral testing and a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

We are conducting cutting-edge research focused on the early detection of reading difficulties marked by early language characteristics in pre-reading children (ages 4 to 6) by looking at brain processes of children with and of children without a family-history of dyslexia. Reading problems tend to run in families. Given this, we are researching children with at least one family member diagnosed with dyslexia (either one sibling or one parent), in an effort to examine how these pre-readers use their brains. Our aim is to compare the brain networks of children who may later show signs of developmental dyslexia with those of typical pre-reading children.

The main goal is to use brain imaging methods to identify children at risk for developmental dyslexia at a very early age, before reading skills are even present. An advanced understanding of brain processes in children with a risk for developmental dyslexia may help us to improve and implement early remediation programs. It may also lead to the development and extension of supportive social networks for parents and children. We hope that our work will help educators, scientists and parents to better understand how children with developmental dyslexia can best be supported to improve their reading development and experiences.

To reach these goals, Dr. Nadine Gaab and her Team at the Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School are currently working with pre-reading children who may be at risk for developmental dyslexia. Dr. Nadine Gaab and her team have extensive experience working with children in the field of developmental dyslexia.

Participation in this study will involve 1-2 sessions of behavioral testing and one session using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which is a non-invasive tool to examine brain differences in children with and without a family history of developmental dyslexia. We also have some actual pictures of the fMRI scanner in the Kids Area. Here is a further link for your kids, where they get a short impression about the task that we perform in the scanner A Spaceship Adventure. If you still have questions or if you would like to participate, please contact us per email or call the Gaablab at 857-218-4629 04 857-218-3022.

The most important part of our studies are our participants. We can't conduct research without them!

Frequently asked questions:
  • How much time is required for the study?

The aim of the study is to look for early markers of reading impairments in pre-reading children with a family history of developmental dyslexia. Ideally we would like to have you and your children come in for two-three initial visits this year and then for one visit next year and the year after. This year we would examine language and pre-reading skills as well as some more specific auditory skills (this could be done in one longer visit or two shorter visits). We have extensive experience working with children and usually the children have lots of fun here at the center. Furthermore, we would schedule one brain scan this year We will further schedule a session for next year (approximately one year (12 months) after the initial brain scan) and the year after (approx. after 24 months).

We hope that we will be able to predict reading outcome (in the second and third year of the study) based on the initial skill examination as well as the initial brain scan. Approximately 30 children with a family history of dyslexia and 30 children with no family history will participate. We can certainly provide you with a report after each session (e.g.; standardized language scores).

  • Are there certain days/times when appointments are scheduled?

We are very flexible. For the behavioral session(s), you can come in during the day or in the evenings as well as on weekends. You can choose to come in on 1 day (with a longer break in between) or on 2 different days.

The brain scans are usually scheduled during the day or early evening but this may change in the near future.

  • Is the information shared with us after the children are tested?

Sure, we can send you a report after each year's session. Let us know if you are interested.

  • Why participate?

Your help will be invaluable to families and scientists interested in reading, language and cognitive development, early diagnosis of learning disabilities and improvement of teaching methods. Your child will play games and will receive a gift certificate to a local bookstore and a picture of his or her brain.

  • Location?
