Allergic Disease Research

Children's Hospital Boston's expansive research enterprise comprises a wealth of intellectual assets and physical resources that provide an ideal setting to advance research into food allergy and other allergic diseases. The hospital is home to the world's largest pediatric research facility, with a staff of 1,200 scientists and staff. Its current initiatives have attracted a record $120 million in funding, including more federal funding than is awarded to any other pediatric facility. Situated in immediate proximity to Harvard Medical School and several renowned Harvard-affiliated medical institutions, Children's investigators continue to take advantage of myriad opportunities for collaborating with fellow world class scientists in Boston's broader medical community.

Children's Division of Allergy/Immunology sponsors one of our nation's most extensive basic and clinical research efforts and one of its oldest and finest training programs. The Division's research laboratories, located in the Karp Family Research Building, are staffed by eight full-time research faculty along with more than 40 post-doctoral fellows, technicians, graduate students and administrators.

Headed by Raif S. Geha, MD, an internationally recognized physician, scientist, and teacher who has received numerous awards for his work in immunology, the Division has a lengthy track record of cutting edge research in allergic and immunological mechanisms. Dr. Geha's group is recognized world-wide for its work on IgE regulation, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (an inherited immune system disorder), and CD40 and CD40L function, which promote the growth, differentiation and survival of immune system B-cells.
