Research Interests
Dr. Austin is Director of Fellowship Research Training in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Childrens Hospital in Boston. Her primary research is in the behavioral sciences and social epidemiology, addressing social and physical environmental influences on eating disorders risk, nutritional patterns, and physical activity in school and community settings. In addition, her research interests include sexual orientation and health disparities and media and health communications. She received her doctorate from the Department of Health and Social Behavior at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Austin is lead author of studies on the role and challenges multidisciplinary teams face in implementing nutrition and physical activity policy and environmental change initiatives in schools and on the role of fast food outlets in school neighborhood environments. She is also lead author on two studies demonstrating the protective effect of the Planet Health curriculum on the development of eating disordered behaviors in early adolescent girls.
