2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Observance
The 1/22/2009 Observance program, organized by Jessica Henderson Daniel, PhD, and the Observance Committee, was titled "The Legacy of Living the Dream" and Emery N. Brown, MD, PhD, served as the keynote speaker. Dr. Brown is an HMS Professor of Anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as Professor of Computational Neuroscience in Health Sciences and Technology at MIT. Drawing inspiration from the election of Barack Obama to US President, Dr. Brown recalled a frequent question from his own father regarding major experiences, "what is the practical lesson?", and reviewed President Obama's past history for guides to success: community organizing and tapping into support networks; his efforts at combining law school with editing the Harvard Law Review prefigured his tendency to work hard at all endeavors; and his ability to reach out to many varying groups of people. Reminding the audience that "you don't know how smart you really are until you work hard." Dr. Brown emphasized that small scale accomplishments are credible and long-lasting.
Children's Hospital's Black Achievers, Michelle Boyce, Administrative Associate III in Cardiology, and Victoria Dune, Assistant Chief Technologist in Nuclear Medicine at Waltham, were also recognized at the Observance.
