The goal of this program is to prepare M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D. postdoctoral fellows for biomedical research careers in Transfusion Medicine. This recently (2001) formed Program in Transfusion Biology and Medicine has a broad scope of clinical and basic research activities, all of which relate to hematopoietic cell therapy: Blood Banking (the collection, processing and storage of peripheral blood and bone marrow derived cells), Clinical Transfusion Medicine (transfusion/transplantation of mature and stem/progenitor blood cells; cellular immunotherapy), and Transfusion Biology (cellular and molecular biology of blood cells, immunity of blood cells, cellular engineering of stem and immune-competent blood cells).

The major Harvard Medical School (MHS) affiliated institutions participating in this training program include Children's Hospital Boston (CHB), Immune Disease Institute (IDI), Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), Brigham and Women's Hosiptal (BWH), and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Our approach of including faculty is a fundamental strength of our program and fits well wiht the broad nature of Transfusion Medicine and our overall mission to facilitate cross-fertilization of clinical, basic and translational research talent. Our faculty, consisting of physician-scientists (M.D., M.D./Ph.D.) or Ph.D. scientists, represent a broad range of disciplines, many of whom are not only connected through this postdoctoral training program, but also through other Harvard-wide, multi-institutional programs, e.g. Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Center for Human Cell Therapy, Dana-Farber Cancer Center, and the NHLBI funded Clinical Trials Network in Transfusion Medicine/Hemostasis. This training program provides a rich training environment for academic transfusion medicine.

Applications are now being accepted for Postdoctoral (M.D. or Ph.D.) Fellows who desire research careers in the expanding, multidisciplinary field of blood cell biology. The program offers a stimulating environment with various basic science and applied research opportunities, and is supported by senior faculty in the Departments of Pediatrics, Pathology, Hematology/Oncology, Immunology and Genetics. Fellows will conduct independent research for two years under the direction of one mentor, with opportunities for collaborative and inter-laboratory projects. The principal research fields include stem cell biology including immune modulation, gene therapy, cancer immunology, platelet biology, and hematopoiesis. Publication in an international peer-reviewed journal is a prerequisite for acceptance into the program. As per NIH guidelines, candidates must be a citizen of the U.S. or hold permanent residency status in the U.S. to apply. Send curriculum vitae, statement of interest, and three reference letters to: Leslie E. Silberstein, M.D., Director, Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine, c/o Maureen Hudd, Children's Hospital, Boston, Karp Family Research Building, 10th Floor, Room 10217, 1 Blackfan Circle, Boston, MA 02115 or via e-mail to Maureen Hudd
