Global Health Center at Children's Hospital Boston, established July 2009
First meeting to be held this Thursday, July 30, 5:30pm in the NADAS conference room, Farley (FA) 230

    Dear Colleagues:

There has been considerable momentum within the Children's Hospital community for developing a more organized institutional approach to global health. We are fortunate in that our hospital community is already substantially engaged in programs with a global scope and we have considerable resources in our immediate community to draw from (Harvard School of Public Health, Partners in Health etc...).

There was formal recognition of this momentum in the course of the last year and it has led to the formation of a "Global Child Health Center" at CHB. Clinical fellows and the attending staff have been primarily invloved to date, but the goal is to make this an institution wide effort. Specifically the goals are:

    1) Establishment of a central clearinghouse for information relevant to global health concerns - this will be in the form of a website and office within the institution that will provide updated information on travel grants (an other sources of funding), existing projects, available mentors, global institutional relationships/partners, educational resources and cultural activities within the community.

    2) Creating an advocacy front/institutional umbrella - for individuals interested in pursuing global health projects.

    3) Providing a forum - for visiting speakers involved in relevant global health issues.

I believe that this is an exciting opportunity for any of you interested in incorporating global health experiences into your fellowship training/research. The term "global health" makes the assumption that states of health and disease exists in the regional patterns that were once the case. Globalization has eliminated those boundaries and so to some extent we all practice global medicine. If you are interested in hearing more about this effort, or think that you might want to join the core group of fellows working with the attending staff establishing the center, please feel free to come to a meeting in the NADAS conference room FA 230 this Thursday (7/30/2009) at 17:30. I understand the difficulty of co-ordinating schedules. If you cannot come, but would like to be involved feel free to e-mail me at Mjaye Mazwi, MD.

    Sincerely,
    Mjaye

Fellows' International Health Interest Group, established October 2008

    Dear Colleagues,

From conversations I know that many of us share an interest in International health. Within the hospital community and affiliated institutions there are an impressive number of people and organizations involved in global health issues and a large number of fellows from other parts of the globe with insight that we would all benefit from. As a result of our relative isolation within our departments and the demands of fellowship we are largely unaware of these opportunities. I have been in communication with the Children's Office of Fellowship Training (OFT) and they have kindly agreed to assist in setting up an International health group within the fellow community. The objectives of the group would be:

    1) To serve as a clearinghouse for information:
Ideally, we would create a constantly updated database of current international health experiences available to all fellows with detailed information about areas of particular need and sources of funding available for travel.

    2) Advocacy:
For greater recognition of the importance of such opportunities for fellows. A central part of our advocacy would be securing institutional support, both in credit for time spent and funding/resource provision wherever possible.

    3) Educational:
The group would keep fellows updated on lecture series, visiting speakers and educational resources here in Boston and meet periodically to hear from members about trips they have taken and discuss current issues in global health.

The ultimate ambition is to make a greater involvement with the international community an integral part of fellowship and a part of this would be making international health experiences available to any fellow who wishes to travel. As a result of globalization health and disease no longer exist in the isolated pockets that they once did. In the final analysis we will all practice global health. We have a unique opportunity with our (endless) training to share the goodwill that I know we feel.

If you are interested in joining our group, please e-mail me at Mjaye Mazwi, MD or page me at (617) 355-PAGE, i.d. 4596. I would be delighted to hear from you about any additional ideas you have.

    Sincerely,

    Mjaye L. Mazwi MD
