4 winners of oral presentation for Research Day 2009:
1. Sunny Hartwig, PhD, Division of Nephrology, ChIPping Away at the Molecular Functions of WT1 in Kidney Progenitor Cells in vivo
2. Ofra Benny, PhD, Vascular Biology Program, An antiangiogenic nanotechnology strategy for suppressing cancer metastases
3. Justin Klein, MD, Department of Surgery, Sternal Repair With Bone Engineered From Amniotic Mesenchymal Stem Cells In An Allogeneic Leporine Model
4. Samir Koirala, PhD, F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center, GPR56 regulates neuronal adhesion and is essential for rostral cerebellar development
2 winners of Houseofficer Development Award 2009, from the Medical Staff Organization:
1. The winner in the clinical research cataegory is Dr. Sarah Pitts from the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, whose proposal "Clinical Trial of Vitamin D Supplementation in Healthy Adolescents" aims to evaluate Vitamin D supplementation to address what may be vitamin D deficiency of epidemic proportion in adolescents. Dr. Pitts is a second year Fellow in Adolescent Medicine, having done her internship and residency here at Children's Hospital and established a beachhead as a clinician, investigator and writer. Her research mentor is Cathy Gordon, the director of the Childrenıs Hospital Bone Health Program, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics; her department Chief is Jean Emans.
2. Dr. Stefanie Gauguet, from the Division of Critical Care Medicine / Department of Anesthesia is the winner in the empirical research category for a project entitled "Pathophysiology of Pediatric Pulmonary Influenza Staphylococcus aureus co-infection." Dr. Gauguet proposes to examine the rather sinister hypothesis that the H1N1 Influenza A viruses may set the stage for increased severity of coinfection with Staph aureus by altering epithelial cell surfaces and / or modulating host inflammatory and immune responses, in an effort to more precisely understand why most influenza-associated deaths are caused by bacterial superinfection, especially Staph aureus. Dr. Gauguet is a second year clinical research fellow in pediatric critical care medicine, having completed her MD and PhD at the Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany, a post doc in infectious disease in the Channing Lab at Brigham and Womenıs Hospital and pediatric internship and residency at Children's. Her research mentor is Gerald Pier, Professor of Medicine (Microbiology and Molecular Genetics) at HMS and her department Chief is Paul Hickey.
Each award carries a "no strings" amount of $ 5,000; the only thing asked in return is that the awardees will present a poster of their results or work-in-progress at next year's Research Day.

Dr. M. Judah Folkman Research Day 2008
Wednesday, May 21, 2008 was the 9th annual Research Day at Children's Hospital Boston. This year, we have named Research Day in memory of Dr. M. Judah Folkman, who passed away on January 14, 2008. Dr. Folkman, former Director of the Vascular Biology Program at Children's Hospital Boston, provided a beacon of light in pediatric surgery, vascular biology, angiogenesis, and cancer research.
Each year over 100 basic science and clinical research residents, fellows, and instructors submit abstracts, with submissions from over 25 departments at Children's, ranging in topic from "Upregulation of VEGFR-1 Prevents Adaptive Capillary Growth in Hypertrophied Myocardium" to "Risks, Trends, and Outcomes among Pregnant Adolescents and Young Adults," some of which are selected for oral presentation, and all of which are selected for poster presentation. Research Day comprises an entire day. This year it will be held at the Longwood Galleria, in Longwood Hall, and the authors will stand by their posters at strategic times throughout the day. Everyone is invited to attend and there is no charge to do so.

Dr. M. Judah Folkman Research Day committee was a huge success and certainly befitting of naming the day in honor of Dr. Folkman. In all, there were 104 poster presentations from 28 disciplines. Eleven (11) of these were selected for oral presentations at three sessions (Surgical Grand Rounds, Medical Grand Rounds, and an afternoon session), and of these, four (4) were selected as winning presentations. This was the 9th annual Research Day at Children's. The presentations were moderated by Drs. Stuart Bauer and Jordan Kreidberg.
The four winning presentations from today's Dr. M. Judah Folkman Research Day were:
Chong Wing Yung, PhD, Vascular Biology Program, Department of Surgery, who presented "Microfluidic Blood Cleansing Device for Sepsis Therapy."
Jonathan Meisel, MD, Department of Surgery, who presented, "Short and Long-term Inhibition of Intra-abdominal Adhesion Formation with the Angiogenesis
Inhibitor Sunitinib"
Joshua C. Murtie, PhD, F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center, "Topic application of GDNF receptor ligands: A novel treatment strategy for small fiber peripheral neuropathy"
Richard Mark White, MD, PhD, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine, who presented "An expanded pool of embryonic neural crest progenitors predisposes to melanoma"
In addition, the three Houseofficer Development Award winners were announced by Dr. Robert Holzman, President of the Medical Staff Organization.
The three Houseofficer Development Awards winners were:
Clinical: Rahul Rathod, MD, Cardiology, "Impact of Shunt Type on Myocardial Performance in Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome"
