FELLOWS' SOCIALS
- Once a month, from September through June, the Office of Fellowship Training hosts "pizza" socials where research and clinical fellows can get together in an informal setting. These are held on alternating Thursday and Friday afternoons, in Karp and Enders, so that all fellows may have an opportunity to attend.
The next social will be held in September from 4:30 until 5:30pm, LOCATION TBA.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION SESSIONS
- Beginning in September 2005, the Office of Fellowship Training, initiated a discussion session for fellows that focuses on clinical issues in pediatric medicine. (See OFT Past Events page) This ended for the year in June 2006, but will continue again in September.
The clinical discussion sessions are held in the HU 352 conference room on the 4th Monday of every month from 12:00 until 1:00pm. Lunch is provided.

JOURNAL CLUB TO DISCUSS BASIC SCIENCE
- In September 2005, the Office of Fellowship Training started a journal club for fellows that focuses on basic science issues. This ended for the year in June 2006, but will continue again in September. (See OFT Past Events page)
The journal club is held in the Karp 8th floor conference room on the last Friday of every month from 12:30 until 1:30pm. Lunch is provided.

NEW FELLOWS' ORIENTATION
- This optional fellows' orientation, which is repeated monthly, and held through the summer, focuses on the questions that fellows need answered when they first arrive at Children's Hospital and in Boston, such as:
- Are you unfamiliar with the Harvard institutions and their focuses?
- Do you know how and when to choose a health plan for you and your family?
- Do you need information on accessing articles using the Children's Hospital Library or Countway?
- Do you seek answers about your positive tuberculosis test?
- Do you need information on high quality childcare for less?
- Do you wonder how to get discount tickets?
The seminar includes a component for international fellows.
Led by Fern Remedi-Brown, Coordinator, Office of Fellowship Training, together with Jordan Kreidberg, MD, PhD, Director, Office of Fellowship Training

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
- Participants generally take two hours of class (5-7pm) plus one hour of language lab (at a flexible time) per week. The curriculum for class includes development of communication skills with focus on the workplace, U.S. culture and culture differences, and news and current events. In addition to conversation, some attention is also given to reading and some grammar points. The language lab is composed of computer-based listening programs and also aids with writing (letters, journals, e-mail), as well as identifying grammar needs. Two teachers staff the language lab and assistance is individualized and on a drop-in basis. A list of web sites for learning resources is also provided to participants.
The Spring 2006 semester ran from April 24 until July 6, 2006. A fifth ESL (fall 2006) semester will begin the week of September 11 and will run 11 weeks, concluding the week of November 20, 2006. In order for a research fellow to participate, s/he must be recommended to the Office of Fellowship Training by his or her PI. PI's may e-mail Office of Fellowship Training .
