HIPAA - the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL COMMITTEE ON CLINICAL INVESTIGATION.
Welcome to the Children's Hospital Research Website for Investigator HIPAA Education and Training.

Provisions of the HIPAA regulations require that all individuals who have access to protected health information receive training that is specific to their roles and responsibilities. This website provides educational information that is pertinent to applying the HIPAA regulations to the research initiative at Children's. This educational information applies to all types of clinical research including, clinical trials, surveys, epidemiological research, medical record/database reviews and human subject specimen collection. Children's Hospital is required to provide educational materials, and document that training has occurred. The website is developed for you to review the education materials and answer a few brief questions as a tutorial. Once you complete the tutorial your name will be automatically added to the training database that is maintained by the Committee on Clinical Investigation administrative office. This will serve as evidence of your completion of the HIPAA training.

Who Requires Training?

All individuals who are listed on protocol applications, including medical record and database review protocols, as well as specimen requests, are required to undergo training.

When Must Training Be Complete?

Training is required before an investigator or research staff member utilizes protected health information in the context of clinical research.

How should training be completed?

1. The HIPAA training is a module within the web based training for human subject protections (the CITI course, based out of the University of Miami). Individuals who complete the CITI training after July 2003 are considered HIPAA trained for research purposes.

2. Children's Hospital has also developed a separate Children's Hospital Research HIPAA training module that is specific to the institution's policies and procedures. Research staff are encouraged to complete this training module as well.
