While no patient's experience is exactly like another's, below is a general idea of what you will experience when your child has her first appointment in the Diabetes Program at Boston Children’s Hospital.

What to bring to your first appointment

You will receive a questionnaire in the mail that encompasses your child’s entire medical, family, social and birth history; we know it’s very long, but it’s important that your child’s medical team has all this information. Please fill it out and bring it to your first appointment.

Please also bring the following items if you have them:

  • List of current medications
  • Medical records from other institutions
  • Any medications or equipment (such as a blood glucose meter) your child currently uses
  • Diabetes logbook or diary
  • Contact information for any providers your child is seeing (physician, dietitian, specialists).

How it works

Your initial consultation may include:

  1. A medical evaluation by a doctor skilled in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes treatment. The doctor will assess your child’s health and will contact your child’s primary care provider if necessary to help coordinate care.

  2. A learning session with a nurse educator. Our nurse educators are the front line of patient education. They’ll educate you about every aspect of caring for your child, including measuring insulin, injecting it and using an insulin pump. Most importantly, they will give you the information you need to ensure your child’s best health and well-being.

  3. A nutrition evaluation with a registered dietitian. This can help you plan a customized meal plan for your child. The dietitian can also educate the whole family on the role of food in the management of your child’s diabetes.
