Ultrasound is a safe and effective way to examine the musculoskeletal system of the body to detect problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue without exposure to radiation. Ultrasound can be used to help diagnose and treat sports-medicine conditions such as synovitis, bursitis or tendonitis.

An ultrasound exam can show movement, function and detailed anatomy to enable the physician to pinpoint the source of pain and treat it effectively. The treatment for tendon-related problems (such as tennis/golfer’s elbow, patellar or quadriceps tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis) may include ultrasound-guided injections.

What are the benefits of an ultrasound-guided injection?

It can be useful to inject corticosteroid and/or local anesthetic medication directly into the joint or the soft tissue next to a joint (often called a bursa) to reduce the inflammation and provide pain relief. Reduction in pain can help patients work more aggressively and effectively on physical therapy.

Ultrasound-guided injections can provide short- to long-term pain relief for tendon-related problems (such as synovitis, bursitis or tendonitis) when paired with physical therapy. Pain management typically lasts four to six weeks and may help facilitate rehabilitation.

Injections do not provide long-term pain relief and do not alter the course of underlying joint disease (e.g., osteoarthritis).

Corticoid steroid injection uses cortisone as a localized ant-inflammatory agent in the area around the tendon, bursa or joint. The purpose is to reduce inflammation and pain and allow patients to work on strengthening and stabilization exercises.
