Boston Children’s Hospital has long been at the forefront of providing expert, compassionate care to children and adolescents with a variety of mental health problems. Team members in out Department of Psychiatry are recognized leaders in researching, diagnosing and treating the full spectrum of anxiety, mood and behavioral disorders, as well as traumatic stress, neurological disorders and other medical conditions that can cause intense feelings of worry, fear and sadness.

The treatment approaches we typically use include:

  • cognitive behavioral therapy
  • individual psychotherapy
  • family therapy
  • group therapy
  • parent guidance

Our approach

Our approach to mental health care is primarily evidence-based—which means that our approaches have been tested and demonstrated to be effective through research studies. While we use “talk therapy” as our primary method of delivering these treatments, should your child show signs of potentially benefiting from medication in addition to psychotherapy, we will work with our colleagues in Boston Children’s Psychopharmacology Clinic to help you determine the best course of action.

Above all, our experienced Psychosocial Treatment Clinic team members are dedicated to delivering outstanding care that treats your child as an individual while considering the needs of your entire family.

The term “psychosocial development” refers to a child’s personal psychological growth while learning how to interact with others and the world. Boston Children’s Psychosocial Treatment Clinic uses a variety of evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches to address the often-complex mental health needs of children and adolescents whose psychosocial development is impacted by:

Our team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other health professionals work closely with families to develop a treatment plan that:

  • takes into account the particular circumstances of your child’s situation

  • helps your child feel and function better while learning new coping skills which may lead to a happy, fulfilling adult life

  • involves you and your family at every stage of care

While clinicians in our Psychosocial Treatment Clinic do not prescribe medication, should your child’s situation call for possible drug treatment in addition to psychotherapy, we will coordinate care with our colleagues in Boston Children’s Psychopharmacology Clinic to determine the best next steps.

Many of our clinicians are also engaged in clinical research with real implications for better understanding, treating and, one day, preventing mental health problems in children and young adults. Some of our research projects include:

  • determining the specific aspects of psychotherapy that lead to the best long-term outcomes for children

  • tracking the progression of families with a history of depression

  • examining the use of social media and networking technologies to help children and families living through a variety of medical experiences

Boston Children's is leading the way for mental health reform in Massachusetts

In 2006, Boston Children’s co-wrote a paper, “Children’s Mental Health in the Commonwealth: The Time is NOW” that highlighted the critical need for increased, improved and revitalized mental health services for Massachusetts children and families. Today, we are working with other health providers, nonprofit organizations and parent groups to advocate for a comprehensive reform of the state’s mental health system.
