The Periodontic Program at Boston Children's Hospital is dedicated to the treatment and prevention of gum diseases in children.  Our specialized focus on the pediatric population allows us to address the special concerns and needs of each child, as well as their family's need for information, support and assistance.

Periodontics is the specialized branch of dentistry concerned with the prevention and treatment of diseases affecting the gums. Periodontal diseases are bacterial infections that destroy the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold the teeth in the mouth. The two different gum diseases people have are:

  • Gingivitis: inflammation of the gums caused by a build up of plaque and tartar. If left untreated, gingivitis may progress into periodontitis.
  • Periodontitis: a serious gum infection that occurs when bacteria is left under the gum for too long. If left untreated, the inflammation can spread deeper in the gum until it reaches the jawbone and dissolves the supporting tissue.

If your child has a periodontal disease, it’s important to treat it early, since these diseases can lead to tooth loss.Treatments for gingivitis include regular cleaning, brushing and flossing. Periodontic treatment may also involve deep scaling (cleaning), gingival (gum) surgery and the placement of dental implants.

Our expertise

As one of the few periodontic practices focused on a pediatric population, our experienced clinicians are trained to provide comprehensive care to children with diseases of the gums. In addition to treating children who are well, we also care for children who have special medical needs that make maintaining oral hygiene difficult.

Our mission

Our mission is to educate parents and children about gingival and periodontal diseases and play a preventive role in helping them avoid more serious problems later on in life. We strive to communicate and connect with each child or adolescent in order to create a comfortable and caring environment.
