The Mayo Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center (PPRC) at Boston Children’s Hospital at Waltham is day treatment rehabilitative program for children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 18 years who continue to have disabling, chronic pain despite outpatient treatment.

We care for children who have chronic pain due to a variety of conditions including complex regional pain syndrome, neuropathic pain, headaches, abdominal pain and musculoskeletal pain. Our highly specialized and dedicated team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, nurses and physicians work together to provide an individualized treatment plan for each child.

Children and adolescents with chronic pain often miss school on a regular basis, stop spending time with their friends and have visited multiple medical providers, often without benefiting from treatment. The goals of our holistic approach are for children to:

  • regain control of their lives

  • resume normal function, including school, play and socialization

  • address emotional distress related to the pain

  • regain the physical strength and endurance necessary for full involvement in life activities

  • re-establish more normal relationships with family and friends

  • replace a self-image of disability with one of wellness

Although the specific treatment plan—including the length of stay at the PPRC—will vary depending on the particular needs of each child, treatment at the PPRC consists of intense physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychological therapy, medical and nursing management.
