Pediatric Pain Medicine Fellowship

Boston Children's Hospital offers a one year Pediatric Pain Medicine Fellowship that provides excellent multidisciplinary training in both adult and pediatric pain medicine.  This unique fellowship combines training in Anesthesiology, Physiatry, Neurology and Psychology and is the only ACGME accredited pediatric pain medicine fellowship in the US.

The fellowship is approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology and accredited by the ACGME to fulfill the requirements for eligibility for the Certificate of Special Qualifications in Pain Management.

Fellows will spend six months of the fellowship year at Children’s Hospital Boston Pain Treatment Service learning the care of acute, chronic and cancer pain in infants and children.  During the six months at Children’s Hospital Boston, fellows will gain experience in the outpatient Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic, the Acute Pain Service, the Pediatric Headache Clinic and the Mayo Family Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center.  In addition, fellows will have rotations in palliative care, psychiatry, physiatry and regional blocks. Fellows will then rotate for 3 months each to the adult pain medicine centers of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH).  The BIDMC and the BWH have renowned training programs in adult pain medicine and provide diverse and complimentary training for fellows.

Clinically based or laboratory research opportunities are also available.  Funded positions are available for an additional three to six months of training after the required one year fellowship.

Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Fellowship

The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Boston Children's Hospital is offering non-ACGME accredited fellowship training in pediatric regional anesthesia. This competitive program has been developed in response to the increase in the demand for sophisticated regional anesthesia techniques in pediatric populations and the recognition that the next generation of pediatric anesthesiologists will benefit greatly from advanced knowledge and skill in regional anesthesia. Boston Children's Hospital is a teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School.

This fellowship level program provides the didactics and experience necessary to allow program graduates to function at a consultant level of proficiency in regional anesthesia and perioperative pain management for neonates, infants and children. Clinical experience consists of the provision and management of advanced regional anesthesia techniques throughout the main hospital and satellite outpatient facilities with the regional anesthesia fellow functioning as a key member of a free-standing Pediatric Regional Team.  Boston Children's Hospital is committed to the development and maintenance of a robust Regional Anesthesia Program and institutionally performed 3041 regional anesthetics from Nov. 2012-Oct. 2013. The case load consists of 5-17 blocks per day of which 40% are continuous catheter techniques.  The regional staff has access to state of the art ultrasound technology and 90% of blocks are placed with ultrasound guidance.

Clinical and basic research in regional anesthesia outcomes and pain management in infants and children is well supported by the structure and resources of the Department and regional fellows have abundant opportunity to pursue academic interests. Faculty members at BCH have pioneered ultrasound-guided paravertebral, fascia iliaca and lumbar plexus blocks and infant TAP catheters.
