Nursing Outreach

SCOOP internship 2015

A hallmark of Boston Children’s nursing team is a commitment to improving the lives of not only our own patients, but of children everywhere.

Community Outreach

As a teaching hospital, Boston Children’s is dedicated to training future pediatric nurses in the wider nursing community. Nurses conduct local outreach efforts at multiple Boston Children’s locations in our Community of Care.

These satellites and affiliated hospitals across Massachusetts bring Boston Children’s care to more children and adolescents than ever before. Our nurses work throughout this network to provide community-based pediatric care closer to families’ homes.

Nurses participate in:

  • Internships & Mentoring Programs:
    • Student Career Opportunity Outreach Program (SCOOP)
The SCOOP summer program offers high school and college students the chance to intern alongside mentors in Patient Service areas. As part of the program, nurses connect with local schools throughout the year to welcome students to the hospital for a visit and hear why nurses chose a healthcare career and answer questions about the profession. Nurses also go to local schools to participate in career and health education events. Check back late winter for more information on 2016 SCOOP Program.
    • COACH Program
The COACH (Community Opportunities Advancement at Children’s Hospital) Program offers summer employment opportunities to Boston Public High School students and helps them explore healthcare careers. It also builds a future pipeline of diverse, qualified people to enter the healthcare field. In addition to working in their respective departments, interns attend weekly workshops to develop professional skills.
  • Community Education Initiative: Education for community pediatric providers (i.e. school nurses)
  • Health fairs
  • The Legislative Action & Interest Group
  • Hosting shadowing experiences for local nurses
  • Hosting intensive shadowing programs for international nurses
