Functional abdominal pain is chronic (ongoing) abdominal pain with no known cause. Functional abdominal pain is the most common type of chronic abdominal pain in children: about 10 to 15 percent of school-age children experience it at some point. Functional abdominal pain is often accompanied by diarrhea, constipation or both, and can be related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
