Meet your care team at Boston Children's

These are some of the team members who will work with you and your child.

DOCTORS  
Attending (also known as Intensivists) Physicians who are board certified in Pediatrics, and/or Anesthesiology, and who receive special education, training, and subspecialty board certification specifically in critical care. Intensivists work closely with other experts to provide critically ill children with ongoing and consistent care.
Fellow A pediatrician specializing in the care of critically ill infants and children.
ICU Resident Doctor in training specifically to be a Pediatrician.
Attending Pediatric Surgeon Trained in and extensive experience in pediatric surgery.
Surgical Fellow Trained in surgery.
Surgical Resident Doctor in training to become a surgeon.
Consulting Physicians Doctors from other specialized services that may be involved in providing care for your child. This includes neurology, cardiology and ophthalmology.

 

NURSES  
Nurse Practitioner A Registered Nurse with advanced, graduate education and experience in primary care pediatrics, pediatric intensive care and certification to practice in an expanded role.
Clinical Nurse Specialist A Masters-prepared RN who provides consultation, education, research and leadership in the care of critically ill children.
Medical/Surgical Critical Care Nurse A Registered Nurse who specializes in the care of critically ill children.
Clinical Assistant Provides day to day care to children while working under the supervision of a nurse.
Primary Nursing Team Responsible for coordinating the care, teaching, planning and identification of resources needed to help you and your child.

 

TEAM MEMBERS  
Respiratory Therapist Provides consultation to the primary team for issues involving airway and breathing.
Psychologist Is available to meet with patients and their families regarding new diagnoses, crisis intervention, sibling support, and psychological adjustment to illness and surgeries. The psychologist serves as a resource to help identify community mental health resources and referrals.
Social Worker Is available to meet with parents regarding new diagnoses, the crisis of hospitalization, and family's adjustment to hospitalization. Provides psychosocial support throughout your child's hospitalization.
Patient Care Coordinator Is an RN with extensive knowledge of healthcare resources in the community. She will be able to assist you and the medical staff in your child's discharge plan.
Child Life Specialist Is a trained professional who works with children in medical settings. They use developmental interventions and play to help patients and families adjust to and understand healthcare experiences. A child life specialist is also available to talk to caregivers about how to support siblings.
Chaplain Available 24 hours a day to offer spiritual and emotional support; represent a variety of faiths including Islam, Judaism, Protestantism, and Roman Catholicism. You may request a visit by a chaplain by calling the office directly at 617-355-6664, or by speaking with your child's nurse.
Nutritionist An expert who will help to feed your child the right foods either through eating by mouth and/or in their veins.
