Who we are

We care for critically ill children, from newborn to college-age youth, who have a spectrum of childhood diseases. Boston Children’s Hospital provides all critical care services for our programs in medicine, general surgery, transplantation, neurosurgery, craniofacial reconstruction, orthopedics, otolaryngology and trauma. Annually, we care for more than 2,000 critically ill children.

Our expertise

  • The Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) at Boston Children's is one of the highest volume pediatric intensive care units in the United States.
  • It includes a state-of-the-art 30-bed pediatric intensive care unit.
  • The MSICU at Boston Children's serves as one of the largest extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centers in the United States with about 60 children treated annually.
  • The MSICU houses the first hospital-based simulator suite in a Boston teaching hospital to enhance the training of critical care physicians and nurses in crisis resource management.

Is the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit the right place to bring your child?

With the exception of severely burned patients and children with cardiac disease, all pediatric disease processes are cared for in the intensive care unit.

The future of pediatrics will be forged by thinking differently, breaking paradigms and joining together in a shared vision of tackling the toughest challenges before us.”
