The Liver Tumor Program at the Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center treats the two primary types of liver cancer in children: hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. Our physicians, who are among the most experienced liver cancer doctors in the country, treat children with both newly diagnosed liver cancer and those with relapsed disease.
Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s is an integrated pediatric hematology and oncology partnership between Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital. We offer, in one specialized program, the full spectrum of services that are needed for diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of even the rarest and hard-to-treat conditions.
The care teams in our Liver Tumor Program include medical oncologists with expertise in treating liver tumors, as well as hepatologists (liver specialists), radiation oncologists, pathologists and transplant physicians. When surgery is necessary, a pediatric surgeon skilled in removing solid tumors is also available.
By participating in tumor biology studies, our researchers contribute to the knowledge base about liver tumors and the indications for using liver transplants to manage these diseases. We are also investigating several leading-edge treatments, including biologic therapies that use the body’s immune system to fight cancer, delivering chemotherapy directly into the liver, and using extreme cold (cryotherapy) to destroy unwanted tissue.
