Kidney Tumors Program Overview

LIke ThisLIke ThisLIke ThisLIke ThisLIke This

If your child has been diagnosed with a kidney tumor, including Wilms' Tumor, you are probably wondering what treatment your child will need. We understand that you may have a lot of other questions, like:

  • Is it painful?
  • Does my child need to be hospitalized?
  • How will it affect my child long term?
  • What do we do next?

Children with kidney tumors are treated through the Kidney Tumor Program at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. We are one of the few pediatric cancer centers that includes many doctors and nurses with expertise in childhood kidney cancers. They will be able to answer all of your questions, from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.

Our expertise

Dana-Farber/Boston Children's offers your child care from many of the world’s most experienced pediatric cancer doctors at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and internationally recognized pediatric subspecialists at Children’s Hospital Boston.

  • Your child’s core care team will include a pediatric oncologist, surgeon, radiologist and radiation oncologist who work together to manage your child’s care.

  • Our pediatric surgeons are nationally recognized for expertly removing cancerous tumors.

  • In some special circumstances, our interventional pediatric radiologists have used minimally invasive radio frequency ablation instead of radiation therapy to kill tumors.

  • Our pediatric radiation oncologists are involved in studies of how to avoid radiation therapy when possible, and when radiation is needed, to minimize the dose and field of radiation.

  • We are New England’s Phase I referral center for the Children’s Oncology Group, so we offer clinical trials unavailable at other regional centers.

  • Long-term treatment and childhood cancer survivor support is provided through Dana-Farber’s David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life Clinic.

Did you know? At risk patients

Some children are predisposed to developing kidney cancers. Our team actively monitors these children, so cancers are identified and treated as early as possible.

Did you know? Stem cell transplant

Stem cell transplant can be used in some cases of resistant Wilms' Tumor. Dana-Farber/Boston Children's provides this option for appropriate patients.

The future of pediatrics will be forged by thinking differently, breaking paradigms and joining together in a shared vision of tackling the toughest challenges before us.”
