What is IBD?

Inflammatory bowel disease, often refereed to as IBD, is a term for inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine. The main forms of IBD are Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, and are considered autoimmune diseases, where the body’s immune system attacks elements of the digestive system.

When you make an appointment at Boston Children's Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center you and your child have access to:

  • gastroenterologists - doctors with special training focused on the digestive system and its disorders
  • nurses to help care for your child and teach you about your child's illness
  • nutritionists and dieticians who are experts in the role food choice plays in managing IBD symptoms, who will will assess your child's nutrition, vitamin, protein and caloric intake to make sure they receive proper overall nutrition.
  • social workers to help you and your child deal with any stress caused by IBD and help you identify and contact community resources available
  • psychologists to offer emotional and psychological support
  • surgeons who in some cases may need to operate on patients with severe cases of Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis.

Our knowledgeable and well-staffed team routinely cares for children who are referred from other hospitals because their cases are difficult to treat or their symptoms haven't been managed as well as hoped.
