Providing the best hip care

Our dedicated team of specialists at the Boston Children’s Child & Young Adult Hip Preservation Program works at the forefront of clinical research and innovation to provide world-class treatment throughout each patient's entire lifetime. We see the whole spectrum of patients from infants to adults and offer both non-operative and operative management of hip problems.

Our experts lead the way in caring for both common and complex hip disorders. The surgical team has performed more peri-acetabular osteotomy (PAO) hip dysplasia surgeries than any other hospital in the country and is committed to advancing minimally-invasive approaches for treating hip disorders.

We provide a range of services, including non-surgical rehabilitation programs, open-surgical dislocation techniques for severe deformities and developmental hip dysplasia (DDH), as well as minimally-invasive hip arthroscopy for labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement. Our pediatric hip sub-specialists perform leading-edge treatment for Perthes disease and other forms of osteonecrosis of the femoral head, including the use of autologous bone marrow cell implantation.

In collaboration with Boston Children’s Department of Radiology, we have also developed precise ways of imaging that lead to more accurate diagnoses for patients. Our innovative MRI techniques can help determine the quality of cartilage in the hip, allowing our specialists to plan advanced cartilage repair surgery that may help preserve the hip from arthritis later in life.

Collaboration with international groups advancing care

Boston Children’s is a founding member of the Academic Network of Conservational Hip Outcomes Research (ANCHOR), a collaboration of researchers dedicated to following patients with developmental hip disease. The group now comprises 10 centers in the U.S. and one in Europe, and enrolls more than 500 patients each year in various studies.

We are also a member of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI), which is committed to improving the health and quality of life for those affected with hip dysplasia through promoting prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

As a member of the International Perthes Study Group, Boston Children’s is a key part of the effort to advance research and care of Legg-Calvés-Perthes disease through helping determine the outcomes of Perthes disease treatment.
