The Center for Perinatal Urology at Boston Children's Hospital offers counseling to expectant parents whose children are diagnosed with congenital genitourinary problems during prenatal care. We support you, your family and your baby — both before and after birth.

Counselors will meet with you and discuss your baby's diagnosis, as well as possible treatments and outcomes, with the focus always on you and your baby. Our team of expert physicians and clinical staff has extensive knowledge and experience in managing genitourinary anomalies in utero and after your baby has been born. In addition, we are actively doing research to provide the most up-to-date care for your baby.

Our expertise

The Center for Perinatal Urology at Boston Children's Hospital treats birth defects commonly related to the genitourinary tract. Hydronephrosis is the most common condition we treat. However, we also offer care and support for obstruction of the urinary tract and other congenital urologic disorders.

Treating hydronephrosis

Hydronephrosis is dilation or stretching of the area of kidneys where urine collects that can occur when there is an obstruction of urine flow. Most children with hydronephrosis are born with the condition, although it can also develop during childhood. Most mild cases — and even some moderate cases — may go away on their own, while severe cases may require surgery.

Improved testing

Researchers at Boston Children's are looking for noninvasive diagnostic tests that will help doctors make better predictions about the baby's health after birth. They're also investigating ways to safely treat urologic disorders, such as bladder outlet obstruction, while the baby is still in the womb.
