When a child with autism is described as having communication difficulties, it means the child:

 

  • Finds extreme difficulty understanding spoken language
  • Has difficulty formulating sentences and talking
  • Has difficulty having a conversation, and engaging in normal social interactions
  • Has difficulty using and understanding gestures

In the ALP, our clinicians believe that these communication difficulties and struggles are a primary deficit for children with autism. Often, when communication improves, so does the behavior and social related problems.

Therapy

Some families come for short-term therapy to understand to introduce and expand upon the visual supports and therapeutic procedures that are determined during the evaluation. During this time, clinicians will review materials that you have prepared, which may be visual supports or scene cues, and go over some specific communication tools.

Monarch School for Children with Autism
Shaker Heights, Ohio

 

In 2002, Howard C. Shane, PhD, was asked by the Monarch School to assist in the development of a teaching model for the Monarch School, a school for students ages 5-22, all of whom are on the autism spectrum. Shane organized a team to achieve an ambitious set of goals for the school.

The goals that evolved from the collaboration were to:

  • Determine effective teaching methods
  • Develop a natural language-based curriculum
  • Develop effective visual supports
  • Introduce technology into the curriculum
  • Establish a schedule and flow for the school
  • Develop an innovative outcome measurement system

 

Results

  • A major program for autism in Ohio, with affiliations with universities and medical centers
  • State of the art educational approaches created specifically for students with autism
  • New educational building opening in August 2006
  • Preschool opening in September 2006
  • Use of natural language-based curriculum
  • Integration of effective technology throughout the educational curriculum
  • Teachers have a unique and effective way of measuring success
  • Enrollment increase of 40%
  • Students know their responsibilities and easily navigate within this environment

Alp Animated Graphics

The ALP Animated Graphics (AAG Graphics) are a set of static and animated symbols intended to improve comprehension and facilitate expression. These symbols can be used with any communication or learning application that accepts media files. For example, Teaching Language Concepts (TLC) Software (Children’s Hospital Boston) or Speaking Dynamically Pro (Mayer–Johnson) can accommodate the AAG animations, while Proloquo2Go (AssistiveWare) can utilize the AAG static symbol set. Additional graphics and research on the effectiveness of this symbol set is on going.

Visual Immersion Program (VIP) - Teaching Language Concepts (TLC)
An engaging application that teaches comprehension and use of abstract language concepts (e.g., verbs, prepositions) through the use of animated graphics and dynamic videos. TLC comes with a series of pre-programmed lessons. Additionally, it allows for customizable lessons to be easily created to incorporate both familiar and highly-motivating videos to further assist in teaching language concepts.

Visual Immersion Program (VIP-OL) - A Video Modeling Application
The VIP-Observational Learning software is intended to help individuals learn new behavioral skills in a two-step learning process (View then Do):

  • "View": Watch a video in which a model performs the sequence of actions that comprises the targeted behavioral skill.
  • "Do": Practice the skill by imitating the actions of the model just observed in the video.

The tool makes it easy to divide raw video routine into its individual steps and create a lesson where the video can be played in its entirety or a step-by-step. An onscreen highlighter can help focus the learner's attention to key portions of the video, and it's easy to select and print still frame photos that represent each behavioral step.

Teaching Language Concepts (tlc)

The VIP-TLC software is an interactive, computer-based instructional program that plays videos of difficult to learn language concepts. The software can be utilized to help teach abstract language concepts, such as comprehension of verbs and prepositions, semantic relations and syntactic structures, through a dynamic medium that for many is more motivating than viewing static images. TLC contains two teaching modes: the Expressive Mode and the Receptive Mode. In both modes, the user is presented with color-coded visual symbols for language elements that are arranged in a left to right orientation. They combine these elements to generate sentences, and the meaning of the sentence is then illustrated by its corresponding video. These visual illustrations of difficult and abstract language concepts may increase the user’s ability to comprehend them and use them for expression. Please view the video for a demonstration of the two teaching modes within TLC.

Receptive Mode:
In this first segment, a mentor uses the on-screen, color-coded topic display to generate a directive for the user to execute, using the corresponding manipulatives which are provided with the program. In this example, the user is presented with the language elements and creates the sentence the boy push the cup. Upon sentence completion the corresponding dynamic scene cue plays to support comprehension. After viewing the video, the user is invited touse the corresponding figurines and manipulatives to carry our the directive him/herself. As the user acquires knowledge of each concept, scaffolding may be reduced. (Corresponding materials (e.g., manipulatives, tabletop printouts) are included with the software package.)

Expressive Mode:
In the second segment of the video, the user is first presented with a video clip, which he/she then must label expressively by creating a sentence that describes what happened in the video. In this example, the user views a video of the block climbing the ladder, and must then select the block, climb, the ladder from the on screen topic display. Auditory feedback is provided in this mode.

Additionally, mentors can easily create customized lessons in order to provide motivating opportunities for language exploration. Examples of customized lessons could include videos with familiar actors (e.g., Mom, rides, a bike; Joey, swims) and video clips of highly motivating television shows (e.g., Elmo, sings, a song; Wiggles, dance).
