Welcome to this new issue of Ab Initio International, the on-line publication of the Brazelton Institute, in the Division of Developmental Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital! One of the primary goals of Ab Initio is to promote the discovery, dissemination and application of knowledge about developmental processes in the first years of life, with an especial emphasis on prevention and treatment.
Guest Editor, Lee McKinnon and I are especially pleased to introduce the following sections in this issue:
The new "In Situ – Voices from the Field" section, where you will find a wide range of clinical vignettes or case studies submitted by professionals from different disciplines and from clinical settings in different parts of the world. [jump to this section]
Three Feature Articles, from three different continents:
1). The first is an intriguing study of the cultural context of the transition to parenthood in Japan, by nurse researcher Eiko Kashiwabara. She examines the use of the NBO as a way of sensitizing Japanese mothers and fathers to their newborn’s capacities and individuality.
2). In the second, Munaf Shaikh, who works as an Occupational Therapist in Early Intervention, examines the concept of cultural competency, with particular reference to culturally competent practice in Indian communities in the United States
3). Finally, Portuguese researchers, Raquel Costa and Barbara Figueiredo use the NBAS to examine the contributions of newborns to the quality of mother–infant interaction*
A remarkable interview with T. Berry Brazelton by guest Editor, Lee McKinnon. “I had the honor of sitting down with Berry Brazelton to talk about his countless contributions over a long career”, she writes. “At age 94, he has a tremendous amount to share”. [jump to this section]
"Urbi et Orbi: News from Around the World", in which we present research and training reports from different countries. There are reports from Australia, Belgium, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Thailand in this issue.
