Pain Treatment Services operates, participates in or refers children and adolescents to six separate clinics or programs that address different forms of pain or pain in different settings:

    Acute Pain Service
The Acute Pain Service is a dedicated team of physicians and nurses who specialize in managing pain in infants, children and young adults during a stay in the hospital.

    Chronic Pain Clinic
The Chronic Pain Clinic treats children who have a variety of pain problems, including complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), pain due to cancer, pelvic pain, back pain, abdominal pain, and many other painful conditions, all on an outpatient basis.

    Headache Program
This multidisciplinary program, operated in conjunction with the Department of Neurology, treats children and adolscents suffering from migraine and other types of chronic headache.

The Mayo Family Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center (PPRC)
The PPRC at Boston Children’s at Waltham is an intensive rehabilitation program that serves the needs of children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 18 who continue to suffer disabling, chronic pain despite having outpatient treatment. Most patients referred to this clinic have been diagnosed with CRPS.

    Medical Acupuncture Service
This clinic specializes in the use of acupuncture performed by trained physicians to treat painful conditions.

    Psychology and Behavioral Medicine
Pain is both a physical and psychological experience. Because the brain plays such a central role in the pain process, we offer interventions that target a child's thoughts or feelings related to pain (e.g., counseling, relaxation techniques).

    School Support
Children with chronic pain who attend school regularly—with the appropriate accommodations as necessary—have better outcomes than those who do not.

    The Comfort Ability
This outpatient The Comfort Ability is a fun and interactive outpatient pain management workshop for children and teens with chronic pain and their parents. The program is run by staff psychologists from Pain Treatment Services and introduces cognitive behavioral and biobehavioral pain management strategies.

Boston Children’s is so much more than a hospital—it’s a community of researchers, clinicians, administrators, support staff, innovators, teachers, patients and families, all working together to make the impossible possible. ”
