MagnetThe American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition® is considered the most prestigious institutional distinction a health care organization or hospital can receive for patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing. Boston Children’s Hospital first achieved Magnet designation in 2008 and was awarded redesignation in 2012. Only 7 percent of hospitals in the U.S. are Magnet designated.

Magnet designation means that the voices of the frontline staff — who are governing and directing work at the point of practice — guide clinical decision-making. Research has shown that patients who receive care at Magnet-recognized hospitals experience:

magnet hospital
  • Lower mortality rates and injury
  • Fewer complications from surgical procedures
  • Higher rates of satisfaction with services
  • Shorter lengths of stay in the hospital

In Magnet hospitals:

  • Nurses are empowered and accountable for their practice.
  • Patients have better outcomes and are more satisfied.
  • Professional advancement is encouraged and rewarded.
  • There is greater staff involvement in decision-making.
We view our designation as a Magnet organization as both an acknowledgment of our accomplishments and as a call for ongoing investment by our nursing community.
We are grateful to have been ranked #1 on U.S. News & World Report's list of the best children's hospitals in the nation for the third year in a row, an honor we could not have achieved without the patients and families who inspire us to do our very best for them. Thanks to you, Boston Children's is a place where we can write the greatest children's stories ever told.”
