Alan B. Retik, MD, Boston Children's Hospital's Urologist-in-Chief and Executive/Medical Director of International Health Services, offered insight into pediatric urology topics during two conference sessions at Arab Health 2012.

Topic: How to Investigate the First Episode of UTI - A New Transatlantic Debate

Dr. Retik outlined the new American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for the management of urinary tract infections in infants and children and compared them with the previous guidelines. He also discussed the controversial aspects of these guidelines and outlined Children’s Hospital Boston's recommendations for the diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections. In addition, Dr. Retik discussed the management of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR).

Dr. Retik discussed management strategies for different degrees of hydronephrosis. He gave the audience a convenient algorithm to follow in regard to what radiologic studies we recommend and when. In addition, he discussed recommendations for the use of antibiotics.
