Our department strives to be a leading source of research and discovery and is actively involved in studies that are improving the way children with inflammatory diseases are treated. Our researchers are involved in:

  • new immunoregulatory treatments for children with severe arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus who are unresponsive to routine therapies
  • alternative medications and treatments for children with rheumatologic diseases
  • laboratory studies of the role of the immune system in mediating inflammation in skin and joints, designed to lead to novel approaches for preventing disease
  • research into the causes of Kawasaki disease
  • studies of new pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to pain control in children
  • new methods of teaching musculoskeletal diagnostic skills to pediatric interns

In addition, Boston Children's is an active participant in the Pediatric Rheumatology Collaborative Study Group, which gives our patients opportunities to participate in national multi-center therapeutic trials.

The future of pediatrics will be forged by thinking differently, breaking paradigms and joining together in a shared vision of tackling the toughest challenges before us.”
