The basic science focus of our laboratory is angiogenesis, the formation of new capillaries from pre-existing blood vessels. Learn more about Boston Children's Hospital's rich tradition in angiogenesis research and discovery, launched by the renowned clinician-scientist Judah Folkman, MD.
Our laboratory is located on the tenth floor of the Enders Research Building on the main Boston Children's campus. Its central location among Harvard Medical School and other affiliated medical centers—including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Joslin Diabetes Center—facilitates collaboration with talented investigators across many disciplines.
Our facility has approximately 2,500 square feet of space with state-of-the-art equipment. The laboratory is supported by both the Boston Children's Department of Plastic and Oral Surgery, under the leadership of John G. Meara, MD, DMD, MBA, and its Vascular Anomalies Center, directed by John B. Mulliken, MD, and Steven Fishman, MD.
The purpose of our laboratory is to study pediatric plastic surgical problems and to develop improved treatments for those conditions. We are interested in translational basic research that has direct clinical applicability. Our basic science questions are derived from clinical experience, and our aim is to translate the knowledge gained in the laboratory back to the clinic to improve patient care.
Our research is focused on two main areas:
Dr. Greene received an MD from the University of Illinois School Of Medicine and an MMSc in vascular anomalies from Harvard Medical School. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, followed by a plastic surgery residency with Harvard Plastic Surgery Training Program. Dr. Greene has also completed two fellowships with Boston Children's, including a research fellowship in the Department of Surgery and a fellowship with the Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery program.
After general surgery training at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Greene studied angiogenesis as a Howard Hughes Fellow in the laboratory of Judah Folkman, MD, at Boston Children's. His research interests include vascular anomalies/vascular biology and cranioplasty/bone healing.
Dr. Lu’s research expertise is in the field of vascular biology.
He obtained his MD from Shanxi Medical University in China and his MS from the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. He then received a PhD from Uppsala University in Sweden, where he studied signal transduction and blood vessel formation. After completing his graduate studies, he matriculated to Harvard Medical School and began his post-doctoral work at Massachusetts General Hospital, studying lymphangiogenesis and embryonic stem cells.
Dr. Lu then completed a second post-doctoral fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he developed novel anti-angiogenic and gene therapies. He joined the Department of Plastic and Oral Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital in 2007.
Our two major collaborations include the Vascular Anomalies Center at Boston Children's Hospital and Boston Children's Department of Vascular Biology.
Within the Department of Vascular Biology, we work closely with Marsha Moses, PhD, who focuses on matrix metalloproteinases; Joyce Bischoff, PhD, who studies hemangioma and endothelial stem cells; and Mark Puder, MD, PhD, who investigates angiogenesis and tissue regeneration.
At the Brigham and Women's Hospital, we are collaborating with Julie Glowacki, PhD, on our cranioplasty studies, and with Dennis Orgill, MD, PhD, on the mechanism of vacuum-assisted wound closure.
Currently, we have opportunities for one to two research fellows each year. We are interested in training medical students, residents and fellows who plan a career in academic plastic and oral surgery.
Typical fellowships last 12 to 24 months. Research fellows will have an appointment at Harvard Medical School and will participate in weekly laboratory meetings and attend clinical conferences in the Department of Plastic and Oral Surgery.
