Tracking surgical outcomes is part of Boston Children’s Hospital’s clinical fabric.
Our nationally recognized Program for Patient Safety and Quality (PPSQ) utilizes a scientifically sound, clinically driven data management strategy to monitor and track clinical outcomes.
PPSQ data show Boston Children’s Urology Department, ranked #1 by U.S.News & World Report, 2015-16, has an A+ ranking (success rates of 99 percent or better) for ureteral implantation for primary vesicoureteral reflux.
"From a practical standpoint, all of us want to know that the treatments and procedures that we perform and prescribe are having the desired effect. Here at Boston Children’s, we have the data and they show our ureteral implantation success rates have been consistently excellent,” says Caleb P. Nelson, MD, MPH, pediatric urologist and director, Quality and Patient Safety, for the Department of Urology.
"We track everything prospectively, and our data show that, if you are going to have surgery, you have a very high probability of success if you have the procedure at the Boston Children’s Department of Urology,” he says.
At Boston Children’s, urology surgical outcome data are stratified by complexity and surgeon, collected and stored via a database management system, then analyzed.
"All implants for primary VUR are flagged, post-operative cystograms are reviewed, and we then identify those patients with resolution of VUR after surgery."

According to Nelson, Boston Children’s ureteral implantation success rates, coupled with the quality and safety data produced, sets Boston Children’s apart from other children’s hospitals.
"We are actively and prospectively tracking clinical outcomes, and there are very few places that I am aware of, assessing hospital-wide performances like this,” he says.
At Boston Children’s Hospital, we believe that referring physicians deserve to know whether the hospital they recommend meets the highest standards and is committed to excellence.
