Quality Care in the Department of Psychiatry

Together with the Hospital, the Department of Psychiatry is committed to delivering high-quality, high-value care to all its patients and families.

The Psychiatry Quality Program (PQP) provides oversight of patient safety and quality initiatives in the Department and works with each program and service to continually assess and improve patient care. Membership includes:

The PQP focuses on continuous improvement efforts within the department. These improvement projects span the Institute of Medicine’s six domains of quality, or STEEEP criteria.

Our current performance focuses on:

  • Safety: Review and root cause analysis of adverse events to establish informed preventative measures
  • Timeliness: Decreasing the amount of time patients wait for treatment or placement for desired disposition
  • Effectiveness: Using data-driven approaches to engage providers, patients, families, and teachers to assess treatment progress and evaluate the effectiveness of our care
  • Efficiency: Decreasing the rate of missed appointments or opportunities for care; and improving patient flow
  • Equitability: Ensuring we serve a diverse patient population with culturally competent approaches
  • Patient- and Family-Centeredness: Incorporating the voice of the patient and family as a primary vehicle for improving all aspects of care delivery through collaboration with our Psychiatry Family Advisory Council
We are grateful to have been ranked #1 on U.S. News & World Report's list of the best children's hospitals in the nation for the third year in a row, an honor we could not have achieved without the patients and families who inspire us to do our very best for them. Thanks to you, Boston Children's is a place where we can write the greatest children's stories ever told.”
