Contact the Department of Cardiac Surgery

At Boston Children’s, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, and cardiac nurses come together to determine and deliver the best course of treatment.

We are melding the fields of interventional cardiac catheterization and high-tech imaging with surgery by taking our catheter expertise into the operating room. This shortens the surgical time and can keep patients from needing to go on a heart/lung machine. This is critically important for all of our patients, but particularly the youngest and tiniest.

The success of many interventions relies on the integration of cardiology and cardiac surgery. Catheter-based procedures tend to use devices, such as stents, whereas in surgery we reconstruct and re-establish the anatomy. Areas that we’re integrating the fields include procedures for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and for heart valve repair or reconstruction. Cardiac surgeons perform the open surgical component; cardiologists perform the catheter-based component. The combination of both technologies into one procedure makes it less invasive and more effective.

We are grateful to have been ranked #1 on U.S. News & World Report's list of the best children's hospitals in the nation for the third year in a row, an honor we could not have achieved without the patients and families who inspire us to do our very best for them. Thanks to you, Boston Children's is a place where we can write the greatest children's stories ever told.”
