Child Protection Clinical Services

The Child Protection Clinical Services Program (CPCS) is an outpatient child maltreatment clinic staffed by psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers and physicians with extensive expertise in the evaluation and response to child maltreatment.

Through our Foster Care Clinic and our Crisis Response Clinic we offer medical, developmental and psychosocial screening, limited medical treatment and referrals services. In addition, we also offer parents and other treatment providers expert consultation on a range of child maltreatment issue.

Children may be referred to the CPCS by Boston Children's Hospital clinical staff, the Department of Children and Families, by their pediatricians, or by parents/guardians.

CPCS staff may offer expert consultation on symptoms of trauma, normative child development, navigation of the child protective service delivery system, and community resources to care providers and parents.

The CPCS team also provides training to the hospital and local community agencies, mental health providers and educators.

Foster Care Clinic

The Foster Care Clinic (FCC) at Boston Children's Hospital is a service of the Child Protection Program. Our team is here to address the immediate medical, dental and developmental needs of children who have newly entered the Department of Children and Families (DCF) custody and to assist their caregivers in learning about and responding to the unique child that has entered their care.

These services are being provided using a two-appointment model, with appointments being scheduled 7 and 30 days after the child has entered DCF custody.

The Foster Care Clinic Provides:

  1. Medical examinations by child abuse experts
  2. Immunizations when clinically indicated
  3. Developmental and behavioral screenings and referrals

The 7 Day Visit

The patient will be examined by a physician specializing in child maltreatment. Acute medical needs will be addressed and referrals for further intervention may be provided.

Foster parents will meet with a mental health clinician to discuss any psycho-social issues which may require immediate intervention.

Foster parents will receive two behavioral checklists, one to be completed by the patient's teacher (if applicable) and one to be completed by the foster parent. Children ages 11-18 will be given a youth self report to complete. Postage-paid envelopes will be provided so that completed checklists may be returned for scoring prior to the 30-day visit.

A comprehensive dental examination will be provided by the dental clinic at Boston Children's Hospital. Any follow up dental care will be coordinated between the dental clinic and the foster parent.
