About Community Health Center Initiative

“It is so good for patients to have easier access to psychiatry in a familiar environment.  I know patients like having the BCHNP psychiatrist as their doctor.”

“The BCHNP psychiatrist is an integral member of the child team, a valuable resource to child clinicians, and also an important consultation resource to the center pediatricians.”

The Community Health Center Program includes partnerships with four community health centers in Boston, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury.  Boston Children’s child and adolescent psychiatrists work on-site to provide early identification, assessment, treatment, and care coordination services to children and adolescents receiving primary medical care at the health centers. The psychiatrists also provide behavioral health training and consultation to health center staff.

Health Center Partners:

  • Brookside Community Health Center, Jamaica Plain, MA
  • The Dimock Center, Roxbury, MA
  • Martha Eliot Health Center, Jamaica Plain, MA
  • Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, Jamaica Plain, MA

In the 2015/2016 academic year, the BCHNP Community Health Center Program provided early identification, psychiatric assessment and treatment, and behavioral health care coordination to 185 children, adolescents, and young adults. The majority (90%) of youth receiving medical care at the partnering health centers are people of color and over two-thirds live in poverty.

The majority of health center staff rated family stressors, depression, trauma exposure, attention problems, anxiety, and disruptive behavior as significant problems for their patients. BCHNP’s community health center program addresses these problems by bringing family-centered behavioral health services into the children’s medical homes in their own communities.  Health center staff reported a high level of satisfaction with this integrated model of service, and 96% of staff rated psychiatric services as good or excellent.

Next Steps:

  • BCHNP will continue to enhance the integration of child and adolescent psychiatrist services into pediatric primary care at community health centers by providing coordinated care, consultation, and education for primary care and behavioral health clinicians.
  • BCHNP will coordinate professional development opportunities to enhance training in evidence-based treatment for behavioral health clinicians working in schools and community health centers.
