Boston Combined Residency Program in Pediatrics
Brigham and Women's Hospital Anesthesiology Residency Program
The Boston Combined Residency Program (BCRP) in Pediatrics and the Brigham and Women's Hospital Anesthesiology Residency program created the first Combined Pediatrics - Anesthesia Residency Program that was approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pediatrics. Graduates will be fully qualified and be able to obtain board certification in both Pediatrics and Anesthesiology.

The program offers superb training in both disciplines and is fully integrated. The first year is entirely pediatrics and takes full advantage of the outstanding training opportunities Children's Hospital Boston and Boston Medical Center. The first year curriculum is identical that of pediatric categorical interns:

Year 1 - Pediatrics
Adolescent Medicine (4 weeks)
Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics (4 weeks)
Emergency Medicine (8 weeks)
General Pediatrics Inpatient Ward (16 weeks)
Neonatal Intensive Care (8 weeks)
Required Subspecialty Experience (4 weeks)
Term Newborn Medicine (4 weeks)
Vacation (4 weeks)
The second year is devoted to anesthesiology and residents begin the first year in anesthesiology fully integrated into the Anesthesiology Residency Program. The curriculum consists of:
Year 2 - Anesthesiology
Adult Intensive Care Unit (4 weeks)
Basic Anesthesiology (24 weeks)
Obstetric Anesthesia (4 weeks)
Pediatric Anesthesiology (12 weeks)
Preoperative Clinic (4 weeks)
Vacation (4 weeks)
Staring in the second year, in order to promote integration with both training programs, residents spend one session each month in pediatrics, and attend one pediatric continuity clinic session while participating in the anesthesiology curriculum. Throughout the remaining three years integration is maintained when residents are participating in the pediatrics curriculum, they will have anesthesiology educational days once a month (Grand Rounds, Case Conferences, Morbidity and Mortality Conferences, Year Group Breakout Sessions).

After the second year, residents will split their time between the two disciplines. The curricular offerings are listed below:

The training environment ensures an optimal exposure to the breadth of the specialty fields with a superb training environment in these three teaching hospitals. This year will be the second recruitment year to the combined program. Robert Lekowski, M.D. of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Anesthesiology Residency Program and Theodore C. Sectish, M.D. of the Boston Combined Residency Program in Pediatrics will collaborate to ensure that the pediatrics-anesthesiology resident's experience is coherent and educationally rich. Samuel E. Lux, M.D. directs the intern selections process for pediatrics and will work closely with Morana Lasic, M.D. of anesthesiology to coordinate the interviews at both programs.
