After Hours With Colleagues
House officers participate in multiple retreats throughout the residency that provide time for resident bonding, reflection on education, and discussion of issues important to the residency.

Retreats

  • Intern Retreat: An overnight beach retreat in early fall (for interns only) to relax and reflect after the first three months of residency
  • Fall Housestaff Retreat: An all-day, all housestaff retreat, often held at the Thoreau Center near Walden Pond. This retreat focuses on getting to know each other outside the hospital. Activities include ropes courses and and other team building activities.
  • Spring Housestaff Retreat: Another all-day all housestaff. This retreat serves as a forum for reflecting on the year, career and financial seminars, voting for teaching awards, and and various fun activities.
  • Rising Junior Orientation: An all-day, intern only retreat focused on preparing interns for the responsibilities of the junior year, including increased autonomy and resident and medical student teaching.
  • Rising Senior Orientation: An all-day, junior only retreat focused on the role of the senior resident, including how to be an effective teacher and team manager, code team leadership training, and PALS re-certification.
Winter Fling
Each winter, the House Staff Association organizes a formal dinner and dance for residents and significant others, as well as invited faculty. All residents are covered from hospital responsibilities during this event.

The Show
The BCRP houseofficers produce an annual show, a comedy "spoof" of the faculty and the vagaries of residency. The show is a long tradition and provides an opportunity for housestaff to showcase their remarkable singing, dancing, instrumental, organizational and comedic talents.

Faculty Dinners
Faculty recommended by the housestaff give small dinners for 8-20 residents in their homes throughout the year.

Theme Dinners
Subsets of the housestaff organize dinners for each other several times a year around food themes or special days, such as European, African, Indian or Chinese New Year.

Tox Rounds
The House Staff Association sponsors frequent evening get-togethers at restaurants and bars around Boston.

Chief Rounds
The chief residents host monthly gatherings at various locations around the city for residents to relax, unwind and enjoy each other's company.

Sports

Many BCRP residents participate in organized sports. There are BCRP softball, basketball, and soccer teams in leagues throughout Boston, and as shown at the right, some are winning titles! Other residents take advantage of hiking and biking trails in Boston and the region or have memberships in local gyms. Harvard University and Harvard Medical School athletic facilities are available to residents for a small fee. The medical school has a gymnasium, squash courts, extensive exercise equipment and an outdoor tennis court.
