BCRP:
BCRP Strategic Initiatives
Endicott House The Boston Combined Residency Program held a Residency Strategic Planning Retreat at the Endicott House in Dedham, MA on November 17, 2007 to determine the major strategic initiatives for the next five years. For the nearly fifty participants, it was an energizing eight hours of reflection, discussion, and visioning. What came out of the planning session was a renewed Mission, a clearer Vision and a consensus on the Values shared by the individual faculty and residents of the BCRP.
Mission
The BCRP trains outstanding pediatricians, provides individualized learning opportunities, and produces future leaders in subspecialty and general academic pediatrics, research, global health, education, advocacy, and population health.
Vision
Training the comprehensive pediatrician of the future with in-depth training in the pediatric subspecialties.
Values
Superb training in pediatrics that is:
  • Patient and family centered
  • Dedicated to providing the highest quality care
  • Compassionate and humanistic
  • Evidence-based
  • Interdisciplinary
  • Innovative
Emphasis and excellence in:
  • Bedside teaching
  • Clinical decision-making and diagnostic reasoning
  • Managing children with chronic illness
  • Professionalism
  • Scholarship
  • Mentorship
Commitment to:
  • Development of the individual resident as a professional
  • Balance in personal and professional life
  • Grooming leaders
A large list of potential new strategic initiatives was generated by the participants at the Retreat. At the very top of the list were six ideas that were aligned with the Mission and reflective of the Values:
  1. Focus training on the creation of the comprehensive pediatrician with in-depth training in the pediatric subspecialties so that they can manage most subspecialty problems without the need for referral
  2. Review work hours, work load, and daily tasks of residents and restructure or reassign these activities to allow for more reflective time during training
  3. Develop longitudinal experiences in the pediatric subspecialties
  4. Increase resident time at the bedside for clinical care and teaching
  5. Promote a change in the climate and environment of the training program to increase the sense of ownership of patients and more independent decision-making
  6. Focus on the generalist-subspecialist interface to enhance the quality of referrals and management of patients with acute and chronic disease
The next steps will be the formation of Working Groups to focus on the top initiatives and establish objectives and outcomes, measures of progress, timelines, champions and stakeholders, and needed resources. Many of the other initiatives will be addressed by the leadership and members of the Residency Program Training Committee with continued involvement and input from all our housestaff.

The BCRP is in the process of implementing these strategic initiatives through two important efforts, the Competencies Initiative, and the BCRP Curricular Review. The Competencies Initiative, led by James Moses, will enhance competency-based training and evaluation throughout the BCRP so that the goals of each training experience are more competency-based and the assessment tools are more specific, direct, and formative. These new evaluation methodologies include direct observations, audits of written communication, multi-source feedback, critique of educational sessions, simulated training sessions and involvement in quality improvement projects.

The BCRP Curricular Review focuses on the missions of the Primary Care and Categorical tracks, an examination of the Core Conferences and the Core Rotations, and an in-depth examination of the Continuity Clinic and the possibility of developing Longitudinal Subspecialty Experiences within that clinic.
