BCRP:
The Personal Touch
The BCRP is a community of over 140 residents, program directors, and support staff. Many residents have recently moved to Boston, and all are working hard to juggle their professional and personal lives. Our goals are to provide a strong support network for residents, and to give our community as many opportunities as possible to spend time together outside the hospital.
Intern Orientation
New interns participate in a 10-day intern orientation before starting. This time is used for interns to get to know each other, to get to know the hospitals, and often to settle into new living arrangements. Activities include a clam bake, computer training, tour of Boston on the famous Duck Boats, Big Sib dinner, PALS course, faculty cocktail reception, various casual social outings, and orientations to specific rotations. In addition, there is a specific curriculum geared towards teaching clinical skills. These modules focus on the skills of working in the ED, performing procedures, and taking call on the ward.
Advisors
The BCRP strives to provide not only optimal educational training but also support and career planning for trainees. The advisor system is an important component to provide personal faculty guidance to residents throughout their training in the BCRP. The advisor serves as a resource in personal and professional decision making.

The role of the advisor includes:

  • Developing a personal relationship with the resident
  • Providing advice and guidance about career choices
  • Advocating for the resident
  • Facilitating the advisee's development throughout residency.
House officers meet with their advisors at least two times each year. Over 50 advisors are available and are assigned to PL-1 residents with an effort to match resident and faculty interests. Residents are encouraged to identify faculty they would like to have as their advisors.

Relaxing in the Housestaff Lounge
The Housestaff Lounge is a space dedicated to the residents. It contains computers, printers and a fax-scanner, a television and VCR, movie library, refrigerator, microwave, mailboxes, and sofas. This room is used by residents to relax, to gather for informal meetings, and for various lunch-time conferences.
