An integrated hospital information system is available at both institutions to provide state-of-the-art information management. Capabilities available to all house officers at both institutions include computerized order entry, electronic medical records including online laboratory data and radiology images, and online resources such as drug formularies, electronic journals and medical literature searching. Integrated email and paging systems facilitate communications across both sites. Children's Hospital and Boston Medical Center have utilized computerized order entry for some time and Children's is in the final stages of implementing entirely electronic documentation throughout the hospital. Boston Medical Center is nearing a complete electronic medical record with daily progress notes being the last remnant of the paper chart that will soon become electronic. Residents are playing an important role in the implementation of these changes and the improvement of these systems. Of note, remote access to both the Boston Medical Center and Children's Hospital systems is available to all residents. In addition, the newly launched BCRP website provides password-restricted access to useful information for residents such as colleague contact information, upcoming schedules and announcements, and a database of useful articles and presentations.
