Senior teaching at the bedside
Senior residents serve as resident team leaders and role models. They are responsible for supervising the clinical work on the inpatient wards at both institutions as well as caring for patients in the CHB Medical ICU and the BMC PICU. Senior residents play an important leadership role in the education of interns on the inpatient rotations, and of medical students during their core clerkships and elective rotations. They learn principles of medical education and academic leadership through these experiences. The 3-month Career Development Block is a unique opportunity for senior residents to focus on advocacy, educational or on research projects that fit their clinical interests and future career goals. In addition, all senior residents have 6 weeks of call-free elective time to pursue further clinical training, participate in research, or spend time providing international health care. There are a few differences between the two tracks in the Senior year. Categorical track residents spend most of their supervisory time at Children's Hospital, while most Primary Care track residents spend it at Boston Medical Center. During the senior year there are many opportunities to tailor one's clinical experiences to prepare for a career or further training after residency.
