| Doughnut-bearing juniors rounding on the GI/Nutrition service |
The PL-2 (Junior) year is subspecialty focused, builds on the general pediatric knowledge gained during internship and incorporates supervisory experiences. Rotations include Intensive Care, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Stem Cell Transplantation and Oncology services at Children's Hospital. PL-2's get delivery room experience in the busy Brigham and Women's Hospital maternity ward located right next door. Junior residents develop their autonomy and teaching skills through supervisory roles on the BMC inpatient services, the BMC NICU, or on the inpatient services at Children's Hospital Boston. In addition, junior residents build on the diagnostic skills gained in their first year to staff the Emergency Room overnight, when they will see a higher volume of patients and manage them more autonomously. Perhaps most importantly, approximately one-quarter of the year is spent on elective rotations chosen by the resident on an individual basis.
Junior residents in the Primary Care track generally have have their supervisory ward time at BMC. Also, Primary Care track residents have an additional half-day every other week when they can choose between a second continuity clinic or a project in urban health, advocacy, international health or public policy. Those selecting a project are coupled with a faculty mentor throughout the PL2 and PL3 years.
