First Year, PL-1
|
Our PL-1 (intern) year is structured to provide a foundation of knowledge and the confidence to rise into independent and supervisory positions later in the residency. Interns are exposed to the full range of pediatric illnesses in both inpatient and outpatient settings. On the Children's Hospital Boston and Boston Medical Center inpatient wards, interns rotate on geographically-based teams that care for subspecialty patients and general pediatric patients. In addition, interns rotate on the CHB Cardiology service, Intermediate Care Program (PICU step-down unit), the NICU and newborn nurseries at BMC and Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Emergency Department at BMC and Children's Hospital. The outpatient experiences during the intern year include a weekly continuity clinic where interns build their personal patient populations. In addition, they learn child development and adolescent medicine during four-week rotations involving clinical and community experiences. Primary Care track interns have an additional two-week rotation with exposure to community resources such as legal and housing support and local and state advocacy programs. A big change to the program in 2009 was the successful introduction of a night float schedule to the general pediatrics teams at Children's Hospital Boston. We plan to expand this schedule to our other services, as we work to come into compliance with the recently published Institute of Medicine work hour guidelines.
